International & Twin Cities-based Stillpoint Magazine curates contemporary writers and artists to uncover what is behind the self, and inhabits digital spaces to build public knowledge rooted in community psychoanalysis and in collective, inclusive, radical, and hidden truths. The core of what we do, however, is to pair works of contemporary, conceptual visual art with texts: poetry, fiction, social critique, and psychoanalytically based (or informed) theoretical essays. Rather than artworks that are illustrative of texts, or texts that analyze works of visual art, the two are juxtaposed, creating resonances and discordances, antidotes and frustrations.

In this conversation, co-founder & Editor of Stillpoint Magazine Anne Marie Wirth-Cauchon will present three pairings of visual artwork and text, and will open the floor to discuss what emerges—psychoanalytically, and otherwise—from this dialogue between the textual and the visual. Participants may wish to discuss the relationship between art and psychoanalysis more broadly, and also between art and politics or social commentary. Indeed, at the heart of this discussion lies a question that is foundational for Stillpoint Magazine as a project: How can psychoanalysis be mobilized in experimental ways in the 21st century, to bring its insights into conversation with other political, artistic, and cultural trends aimed at social transformation?

We will share excerpts and abstracts for essays during the session, and will read the poetry aloud. For those who wish to read and/or watch in advance, the pairings will include:

“Blade Runner (1982)” a poem by “Franny Choi & Myceaqua Vitae,” a video work by Josèfa Ntjam, which you’ll find here

“Totemizing the Taboo, Or Seizing the Fortress of Whiteness” by Carlos Padrón & “(Be)Longing,” a video work by Cannupa Hanska Luger which you’ll find here

And

“The Tenderness of the Cut” by Vanessa Sinclair & “Sheer Naked Aggression” by Sophie Hoyle, which you’ll find here

Anne Marie Wirth Cauchon is co-founder & Editor at Stillpoint Magazine and a writer and Doctoral Candidate in English and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota. Her first novel Nothing was released in 2013, and she has since published works of short fiction in various publications. Her current research focuses on expressions of (inter)subjectivity, non-nature, community-building across difference, and transformative destruction in Anglophone Slipstream fictions of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
